Reptiles

1943, lithograph

Reptiles is one of Escher’s most celebrated images: expounding his theories clearly while providing a great source of entertainment for the viewer. A drawing of reptiles, successfully interlocking to fill the two-dimensional plane, is disrupted by the apparent ‘escape’ of one of its number, in the bottom left-hand corner of the sketchpad. We follow this reptile as ‘life’, or in artist terms, ‘the third dimension’ is breathed into it and it takes on a new, and apparently more liberated character. Escher was obviously charmed by this creation and described it colourfully: ‘With one plastic-looking leg over the edge of the book, he wrestles himself free and launches out into real life. He climbs up the back of the book on zoology and works his way laboriously up the slippery slope of a set square to the highest point of his existence. Then, after a quick snort, tired but fulfilled, he goes downhill via an ashtray’.
